Car Repair and Service Shops : Find the Right One for Trouble Free Motoring

Whatever vehicle you are driving, you need a good car service center that will give you quality service at a reasonable price.

Here are some guidelines on choosing a car service center:

1. Ask family and friends for recommendations. Shop around first before you decide.

2. Call the recommended shops so you can compare prices as well as policies on warranty on the repairs.

3. If repair shops have to be registered in your state check they have the relevant licenses and certificates. Check with your local “State Attorney General” office or your area “consumer protection agency” as they will have a record of any complaints.

4. Will the car service center accept your car’s “extended warranty”, if you have one.

5. If they have a lot of “repeat customers” this indicates they offer good service and da a quality job.

6. Check service guarantees; all work should have a 12 thousand mile / twelve months warrantee.

Before arranging an appointment with the car service shop:

1. Do they have the latest modern diagnostic equipment and are the technicians well trained?

2. How firm is their phone estimate? The actual price you will pay will probably be different.

3. Is the shop a member of the “Better Business Bureau” or any trade organization like the “Automotive Service Association”? Is the shop approved by the AAA?

4. Are their technicians certified by the ASE as “Master Engine Repair”, “Master Auto Repair”, and/or “Advanced Engine Performance technician”?

5. Will they lend you a replacement vehicle while yours is being serviced?

6. Does the shop require a road test cars before repair and after the service?

7. Does the shop offer guarantee on their completed work for 12 thousand miles or twelve months?

Understanding repair charges:

Before you decide and agree the work to be carried out, check their labor rate and the price of the cars supplies and parts to be changed. Most car service shops usually have a basic hourly rate charge on their labor time. This basic rate is normally based on either the shops or the manufacturer's estimation for the time required to do the repairs.

When the problem is complicated to repair or is expensive, or you have questions regarding the service’ recommended, visit another auto shop and get a second opinion. A written quotation would be a good idea.

Generally, all shops charge for diagnosing your car if you do not have the work performed by them. Whereas if they do the work on your car, they normally will roll the diagnostic charges into the car repair.

You should ask for a written estimate, which should include the following:

1. It must specify the repair to be performed, the labor costs, and how many days will it take to complete the service, what charges apply on the vehicle’s parts that are required for the repair. Make certain that you are given a signed copy of the estimate.

2. It must declare that the car service shop will get your consent before any work is done that is exceeding a stipulated amount of money or time. The State law requires this.

When service/work is completed:

You have to require a completed and signed “repair order” which should describe the service done. It must list every repair, the parts that they have changed and supplied, cost of parts, charges for labor as well as the car’s odometer reading the time the vehicle was brought in and when the work or repair was completed. You can ask them to give you all parts that have been replaced.

Once you found a good shop, where you are confident and satisfied with the service, remain with that car service shop and give them your future dealings, recommend them to friends and family; you need a good and honest repair shop, buy they also need a good client, it is a two way relationship that should benefit you both!
